Helen Mudgett, 63, widowed, terminated from her job, and bankrupt, is forced to move to Cooper's Paradise Hotel, a dilapidated pile of wood catering to indigent senior citizens who thought they could live their lives on the two hundred year plan.
Within hours of her arrivial she is set upon by Ethel Mae Tibbets, a beer swilling, handicapped resident, and her ward, Sarah Brewster, a ten year old refugee from a broken home. They want Helen to help Sarah search for a 1936 Packard Limousine that went missing twenty years ago, along with its owner, Sonny Zervas.
Helen tells them that looking for the car is an exercise in futility and refuses. But after several days of relentless badgering by Sarah, she gives up and agrees to spend one week looking for the car.
In the week before Christmas they set out. They find and talk to several people who lusted after the Packard, Sarah makes a rash wager with an ex Marine, encounters her old nemesis, Betty Worthen, a policewomen not adverse to wine and bribery, and annoys Helen to distraction with her observations and comments about people who are well into the 'damn old' time of their lives.
Fortified by Merlot, Helen tries to adjust to her new life of poverty and deprivtion while becoming reluctantly involved with the hunt for the missing Packard, coping with Miss Em, the hotel's persistent canine, and hard labor on the snow covered veranda roof.
As their quest pulls them ever closer to finding the Packard, they discover the back woods version of a chop shop, have a horrific encounter on a snow swept mountain, engage in some astute Christmas shopping, and, carried on the words of an old man with no hands, head toward a deadly rendezvous with terror and death.

This story could stand on its own as an excellent suspenseful mystery story without memorable characters. It would also stand by itself as a story about how a group of elderly people manage to get by under difficult conditions in their waning years. Finally, it could stand alone as a story about an elderly retired school teacher who meets a young girl with an terrible early life - and both share a life-changing adventure. Fortunately it contains all of those elements along with richly-drawn characters and a memorable small town environment shared with Dadmun's Harry and Cat series. All of these elements come together to make this an excellent story that I will definitely read again.Product details

Mudgett and Brewster edition by Bentley Dadmun Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
fun fun read, and a very good story line,
This story made me want to keep turning the pages! Such a fun mystery and wonderful connection between Sarah, a 10 year old beyond her years, and Helen, whom Sarah loves to drag into her adventures. The characters grow with each other and bond in a fun, unexpected way. Great read!
I really enjoyed this book and found it difficult to put down until I'd finished it.
Helen Mudgett is the leading character who is retired and lives in a
retirement home. Her rental agreement says that she must shovel a roof
that overhangs one side of the house. She is paid for the work. She
befriends another retiree, Ethel Mae and her granddaughter, Sarah
Brewster. Sarah is a 10 years old girl who is way beyond her years in
almost everything and doesn't go to school, she is home taught. Sarah
plans to start schooling with college, when she is old enough. She is
available to help Helen with the shoveling.
Ethel Mae is obsessed with finding a Series 1408 V12 Packard car that
disappeared twenty years ago along with the owner of the car, Sonny.
Since Ethel Mae is wheelchair bound, she asks Helen to help in the search. Helen agrees to try searching and said she would give it one week. Both Mudgett and Brewster start interviewing all the towns people and get some conflicting information which leads them to an interesting ending. Along the way they are shot at and have some
dangerous moments. Miss Em, Sarah's dog is also part of the team.
Another great murder mystery. This is one that can't be put down.
Loved this book! So funny. Many times I thought, "Why am I reading this?" but I couldn't put it down. With a wonderful woven cast of characters and a mystery that keeps you guessing, it is a fun read that will bring a smile to your face. Not quite a cozy but not quite soft boiled mystery...don't know where it lands except a fun who done it! I would suggest this book to anyone who likes a mystery.
I love Bentley Dadmun's series about the old people (I'm technically an old person so I can use that phrase) living in the big house, that is referenced in Midgett and Brewster, and the great character who lives on the same property but apart from the others in a boat with a damaged cat he has rescued.. (I'm terrible at names). But in contrast to that series, which has been tightly edited, this one is full of unnecessary repetition, and I find the little girl obnoxious. But the plot is compelling, with many interesting twists, and if some judicious cutting were done, the book could be terrific.
Like all of Mr. Dadmun's mysteries Mudgett and Brewster is great fun and like his other books we have a relationship between an older, rather pragmatic character who seems somewhat at odds with the world and a sharp youngster with a very different attitude. Sometimes the personalities clash and sometimes they blend. This makes for enjoyable reading. Then, at some point the reader, if he or she is paying attention, realizes that they have been called upon to THINK, and perhaps, solidify their own attitudes as the characters relate to each other.
Mr. Dadmun in his little biographical sketch says he is becoming a geezer. I think his writing tells us that he doesn't think that's such a bad thing. I'm finding out that I feel the same and Mr. Dadmun's stories help me understand why.
This story is set during the Christmas season in New Hampshire. That doesn't mean is a soppy, sweet tale. The season simple sets the stage and gives the reader something with which to decorate the mind's eye.
I've told my wife not to read Mudgett and Brewster right now. Save it for our Annual Anniversary/Christmas trip. She is going to love it!
